Every Kashi itinerary should spare a morning for Sarnath. Ten kilometres from the ghats, the noise drops away into lawns, brick ruins and a different, older quiet — the quiet of the deer park where the Buddha first turned the wheel of dharma.

The Route

Start at the archaeological park as it opens: the Dhamek Stupa rises over the monastic remains, its carved stone bands catching the early light. Walk the ruins slowly — the Ashoka pillar base, the monastery foundations, the votive stupas.

Cross to the museum (check its weekly closed day) for the Lion Capital — four lions, polished Chunar sandstone, now on every Indian coin — and the Gupta-period Buddhas that represent the highest refinement of Indian sculpture.

Finish at Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and one or two of the international temples — Thai, Tibetan, Japanese — where living Buddhism continues the teaching begun in this park.

Practical

Taxi or auto from central Varanasi (30–45 minutes); agree the fare or use an app. Carry water; dress modestly; circumambulate clockwise; keep voices low in the temples. Return to the city for lunch, and the contrast between the two sacred worlds will stay with you.
