About Kashi

Kashi — also Varanasi, also Banaras — is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and the spiritual capital of Hindu India. A yatra here is not sightseeing; it is a sequence of sacred encounters: the Ganga at dawn, Baba Vishwanath's darshan, the guardian Kaal Bhairav, the mother Annapurna, the fire ceremony at the ghats. This guide assembles everything you need to make that sequence smooth, safe and deeply felt.

When to Visit

October to March is the golden window: cool mornings, pleasant days, festival-rich evenings (Dev Deepawali falls in November). Sawan (July–August) is Shiva's month — spiritually electric, very crowded, monsoon-wet. April to June brings severe heat; if you come then, live at dawn and dusk. Full month-by-month detail: best time guide.

How Many Days

  • 1 day: the essence — sunrise Ganga, Vishwanath darshan, Annapurna, Kaal Bhairav, evening aarti. (plan)
  • 2 days: add Assi's morning culture and Sarnath's heritage. (plan)
  • 3 days: a relaxed yatra with lanes, food, shopping and unhurried ghats. (plan)

How to Reach

Fly into Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS), or arrive by rail at Varanasi Junction (BSB), Kashi (KEI) or Banaras (BSBS) stations, or drive the NH network. The old city is a walking zone — the last stretch is always on foot or e-rickshaw. Details: How to Reach Varanasi.

Where to Stay

Choose by temperament: near the temple/Godowlia for darshan-first trips; Assi for a calmer cultural quarter; Cantt for comfort and station access. Dharamshalas and trust accommodations serve pilgrims on a budget. Area-by-area guidance: Where to Stay.

The Temple Circuit

  1. Ganga snan at dawn (Dashashwamedh or Assi).
  2. Kashi Vishwanath darshan — via the corridor or the gali; book aarti/Sugam in advance.
  3. Maa Annapurna — minutes from Vishwanath; the yatra's nourishing half.
  4. Kaal Bhairav — the Kotwal's blessing completes the circuit in local tradition.

Ganga Snan: Considerations

Bathing steps vary in depth and current; use chained/ghat-designated bathing areas, hold chains where provided, avoid deep water, and follow boatman/police guidance in monsoon when the river runs high and fast. The riverfront is sacred and also a working river — treat it with both reverence and care.

Ghats & Ganga Aarti

Walk the riverfront at least once north-to-south (or take the evening boat). The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh at dusk is unmissable — arrive early or watch from a boat. Full coverage: ghats guide and Ganga Aarti guide.

Food

Kashi's vegetarian table is a pilgrimage of its own: kachori-sabzi breakfasts, chaat at Kashi Chaat Bhandar's lane, thandai, malaiyo in winter, Banarasi paan to finish. Stay with busy, clean vendors and bottled/filtered water. Details: food guide.

Shopping

Banarasi silk (buy at reputed showrooms; ask for the silk mark), rudraksha (authenticity varies — buy carefully), brassware, wooden toys, sweets. Our shopping guide includes fraud-awareness essentials.

Senior Citizens & Families

The corridor's ramps and assistance make darshan gentler than ever, but Kashi still involves walking, steps and crowds. See the dedicated senior guide and family guide.

What to Wear & Pack

Modest, comfortable clothing; slip-on footwear; a small day bag; season-appropriate layers (winter mornings are cold, summers fierce). Temple rules ban phones and bags inside — plan around lockers. Interactive list: packing guide.

Temple Etiquette & Photography

Modesty in dress and voice at shrines; no photography inside temples; absolute respect (and no cameras) at cremation ghats. Ask before photographing people. The river is a goddess and a workplace — behave accordingly at both.

Scams & Fraud Awareness

  • "Priests" offering instant special darshan for cash — decline; use the official portal.
  • Unmetered autos — agree fares first or use app cabs where they operate.
  • Lookalike booking websites — the official portal is the only one.
  • Overpriced boat rides — fix the price and duration before boarding; shared boats are cheaper.

Safety

Kashi is generally safe and intensely hospitable, but it is crowded: keep valuables minimal in the old city, fix a family meeting point, mind ghat steps in the dark and monsoon, and keep your hotel's address card on you. Emergency: Police 112.

Suggested Itineraries

Pick your pace: one day · two days · three days. Each is realistic — Kashi rewards depth over box-ticking.

Answers for Pilgrims

FAQs — Complete Kashi Yatra Guide — Plan Your Pilgrimage

Two full days cover darshan, the ghats, the aarti and Sarnath. Three days allow a relaxed pace with Ramnagar Fort or BHU. One day is possible with disciplined planning — see our itineraries.
Where should I stay in Varanasi?
Near Assi Ghat for a quieter, cultural base; near Godowlia for walking access to temple and aarti; near the cantonment for mid-range hotels and the railway stations. Book well ahead for festival dates.
Is Varanasi safe for families and senior citizens?
Yes — it is one of India's most-visited pilgrimage cities with strong police presence in tourist zones. Use registered transport, beware of touts, keep to lit areas at night, and see our senior-citizen and family guides for comfort planning.
