Varanasi has been a city of weavers and metalworkers for centuries. The best souvenirs here are not trinkets but living crafts.
Banarasi Silk
The Banarasi saree — silk brocade with zari work — is India's most storied weave. Buy at reputed showrooms (ask your hotel for long-established names), look for the Silk Mark tag for certified silk, understand that genuine handloom brocade is expensive, and be wary of powerloom pieces sold as handloom. Weaver colonies exist around the city; some showrooms arrange loom visits.
Religious Items & Rudraksha
Rudraksha malas, brass diyas and bells, Gangajal containers, puja textiles and deity images fill Vishwanath Gali. Buyer awareness: rudraksha authenticity varies enormously — buy from established shops, understand basic mukhi identification, and be sceptical of "rare" beads at miraculous prices. No seller's claim of temple-blessing should substitute for your own judgement; we do not certify any vendor.

- Gulabi minakari — pink enamelwork unique to the city.

Fraud-Awareness Tips
- Fixed-price reputable shops beat lane-bargaining for high-value silk.
- "Government emporium" claims by touts are often false — verify the shop independently.
- Get bills for expensive purchases; ask about return policies.
- Decline "guides" who steer you to commission shops.
