What Is a Jyotirlinga?
A Jyotirlinga is a "linga of light" — a site where, in Shaiva tradition, Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of light to settle a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu about supremacy, revealing himself as the limitless source beyond both. Tradition counts twelve such self-manifest seats across India, and pilgrimage to all twelve is among Shaivism's highest aspirations. Kashi Vishwanath is among the most revered of the twelve.

Each Jyotirlinga carries equal sanctity, yet Kashi holds a special aura: it is the city Shiva never leaves, where darshan joins the Taraka mantra's promise at life's end. Pilgrims often pair Kashi with Rameshwaram — Ganga jal carried south, Rameshwaram sand brought north — in the ancient inter-temple exchange that maps India's sacred geography onto a single body of devotion.
Planning Multi-Jyotirlinga Pilgrimage
The twelve span the entire subcontinent — Gujarat to Jharkhand, Himalaya to Rameswaram. Devotees typically visit them in regional clusters over years (Maharashtra's three make a classic circuit; Gujarat's two pair with Dwarka). There is no single official route; travel times and seasons vary enormously (Kedarnath is closed in winter). Plan each leg separately with current information.
