The boatmen arrive before the light. Chai stalls light their fires, and the first yoga mats unroll on the broad steps while the river is still the colour of pewter. This is Assi at 5 AM — Kashi's gentlest hour.

Subah-e-Banaras begins as the sky warms: a small aarti at the water's edge, classical music on the ghat stage, and the sun climbing over the far bank exactly as it has for every generation the city remembers. Wrestlers thud in the akhara pit; a teacher corrects a student's alap; foreigners and grandmothers share the steps with equal claim.

After the programme, breakfast in the lanes — kachori-jalebi if you are brave, toast and coffee if you are not — and then the choice: a boat north along the whole riverfront, or the slow walk past Kedar's striped steps toward the burning ghats, where the city's other truth is spoken plainly.

Every city has a place where it shows you its morning face. In Kashi that place is Assi. Go once and you will rearrange every remaining morning of your trip to return.
