Named for the King Who Kept Truth
Harishchandra Ghat is Kashi's second cremation ghat, smaller than Manikarnika and carrying one of tradition's most powerful stories: King Harishchandra, who gave away kingdom and family rather than break his word, is said to have worked here as a cremation-ground attendant — truth tested to its limit, and vindicated. The ghat keeps his name and his lesson.
Significance
Like Manikarnika, Harishchandra serves the city's last rites, and tradition holds cremation in Kashi sacred. The ghat is quieter, and for many local families it is the neighbourhood's own threshold.
Visiting
The same discipline applies as at Manikarnika: no photography of rites or mourners, sober dress and voice, no guided "dark tourism". If your purpose is understanding rather than sensation, sit at a distance, read about the Harishchandra tradition, and let the place teach in its own register. The ghat lies on the southern riverfront, a walk north from Assi past Kedar Ghat.
